Two tired bodies moved begrudgingly, even the bed linen felt heavy. We couldn’t hang around. We needed a good kick up the ass; we still had two border crossings and a lot of miles to cover. Signing out of El Salvador was easy enough and Guatemala was pretty straightforward once we’d worked out where the offices were! Contrary to what our guide books says we did need to shell out the hefty fee of 40 quecha each for entry into Guatemala, but considering that’s all of £1.20 I wasn’t going to complain.

The CA10 and CA 13 (routes) had been surprisingly good. We hoped to get as far as Rio Dulce by late afternoon but by 2:00pm we’d already gone past. To our amazement we ended up covering 300 miles plus today and we’ve reached Tikal and the Ruins. We’re tired but excited about the prospect of exploring ancient Maya ruins tomorrow.

The hotel here – the Jungle Lodge – was down a very long road that led straight into the National park Tikal. The musty heavy dank earthy smell was just what we wanted …a change from the pollution that we’ve been experiencing in the last few weeks in all the cities we’ve stayed in. Lisa’s glasses kept steaming up and the warning signs of all the different animals that could jump out in front of you were making her jump up and down with excitement and wave her arms at all the signs frantically!!

Heard that there may be problems with deep knee-high mud on the way to the border with Belize!!! Oh – we do hope not…..we had enough of this to last a lifetime in the Amazon.

Got up early and saw the sunrise over the ancient Mayan temples. Hot and humid. Incredible structures over 2,000 years old. Photographed monkey, tarantulas, snakes and others. Great day.

So, you're wondering what the hell happened to the diary?

Well, yes we're still travelling but after 4-years of writing up every day we just needed a break from the writing. After leaving central America we entered Mexico where we spent some time with Lisa's family over Christmas and New Year. From there we headed into Texas and Oklahoma travelling with my own family for 5-weeks. This was the first time I'd seen my folk since we left the UK. Needless to say we wanted this time to be personal again, so didn't write any diary.

After a good break I'm looking forward to writing again and have just started to write up our time in the States, starting as we ride up the Continental Divide Trail, a great dirt trail up to Canada. We'll also be back writing some of our other experiences in the USA over the last few months.

Hope you enjoy, thanks for sticking with us.
